Here is how it works without the engineering degree. Your existing pool pump does the heavy lifting. Normally, that pump pulls dirty water, pushes it through a filter, and sends it back. Clean but cold.
With solar, you insert a detour.
Before that clean, cold water goes back into the pool, it travels through pipes to a solar collector. The sun blasts those pipes. The heat transfers to the water. The warm water flows back in. It’s simple thermodynamics. On really good days, the pool itself acts as a collector, but don’t count on that when the air temperature drops.

You can’t just slap panels on any roof and hope for the best. Location matters more than brand.
First, check the shade. If your pool sits in the shadow of a big oak tree or a two-story garage, solar isn’t going to help you. You need direct sunlight. Uninterrupted. For hours.
Next, look at the surface. You need a large, smooth area. A flat roof works. A south-facing deck works. If your only option is a sloped, shingled roof with gutters in the way, you might be fighting a losing battle against installation headaches.

How many panels do you buy? That depends on two things.

- How warm you want the water.
A small plunge pool needs fewer collectors than an Olympic-sized lap pool. Want spa-like warmth in October? You need more surface area.
Here is the catch most DIYers miss. Distance kills heat.
If your panels are far from the pool, the water cools down inside the pipes before it even gets back to the swimmer. You need the collectors close. Really close. If you can’t mount them near the pool equipment pad, you might need to upgrade your pump. A bigger pump moves water faster, reducing the time it spends cooling in transit. But that costs more money and uses more electricity.
