How to Remove Efflorescence from Concrete and Brick Surfaces

Patience is the cheapest tool in your shed. On a basement slab or garage floor, foot traffic and general wear will eventually grind away those white deposits. If you’re looking at a patio block or a naturally colored concrete surface where the salt buildup barely registers, doing nothing might be your most effective strategy.

But what if the white crust is stubborn? Or if it’s on a stucco wall where it actually looks bad? You have options. The goal is to get the salts out without making the surface worse.

Start with Water and a Stiff Brush

The easiest way to handle new efflorescence is simple washing. The salt is most soluble when it first appears. If you wait too long, it hardens into the pores.

Grab a stiff-bristled brush and some mild detergent or plain water. Scrub it. Just wetting the surface can make the film look like it’s gone, but that’s an optical trick. It just becomes transparent. You have to physically lift the residue.

Crucial step: Rinse thoroughly. If you leave dissolved salts on the surface, they will dry and come right back. You’ll be chasing your tail.

When to Use Power Washing (and When Not To)

Power washing works for surface deposits. But go easy. High pressure can actually open up the pores in concrete or brick. Once those pores open, more moisture gets in, which means more salt migration. You trade a cosmetic problem for a structural one.

Keep the pressure low. Just enough to dislodge the residue. If you have to blast it hard, you’re probably using the wrong tool.

The Dangers of Abrasive Methods

Sand blasting is effective. It’s also destructive. The abrasion damages the surface, making bricks and mortar more porous. If you absolutely must go down this route, seal the surface immediately after you’re done. That seal is what keeps the moisture out.

Chemical Cleaning: The Last Resort

Sometimes water and pressure aren’t enough. You might need a chemical cleaner. You can buy proprietary masonry cleaners or mix your own solution using diluted muriatic acid, citric acid, or vinegar.

Safety first. Wear gloves and goggles. Acids are not something you want on your skin or in your eyes.

Before you apply anything, soak the surface with water. This keeps the cleaner from penetrating deep into the stone. If it penetrates, it opens more pores. That’s the opposite of what you want.

After cleaning, neutralize the acid with a baking soda solution. Then wash the surface thoroughly with water.

Warning: Acid cleaning can discolor stained concrete. Test it on a small, hidden section first. If it turns ugly, stop.

The Best Way to Fix It: Prevention

Honestly, the best way to remove efflorescence is to stop it from forming. Cleaning is a band-aid. Moisture management is the cure. If you keep water out of the material, the salts don’t have a path to the surface.

Check your drainage. Check your sealants. Check where water is pooling against your foundation.

It’s not glamorous work. It’s not quick. But it’s the only thing that actually fixes the problem.
