You don’t need a microcontroller or a battery pack to measure time. You just need household trash and a bit of patience. Building a one minute timer is a fun project that doubles as a practical tool for kitchen tasks, breathing exercises, or just watching things flow.
There are two distinct ways to build this. One uses water. One uses sand. Both rely on the same basic principle: gravity moving matter through a restricted opening. Pick your medium.
The Water Method
This approach is messy but fast. It relies on fluid dynamics. Water flows differently than solids. You will need to experiment with the hole size to get the timing right.
Supplies
- Two 2-liter soda bottles with caps
- Funnel
- Water
- Small drill
- Small screw and bolt
- Stop-watch
Instructions
Start by modifying the caps. Place both bottle caps together with the tops touching. Drill a hole through the caps. Attach a screw and bolt near the center of the caps. This creates a pivot point.
Next, drill a few small holes through both secured caps. These are your flow channels. The number and size of these holes determine the speed.
Drill a hole in the middle of the side of each bottle. You need an air intake or a way to fill the bottle without spilling everywhere.
Attach the bottles to the caps. One bottle is upside down, on top of the other.
Fill the top bottle with water, through the hole on the side. Wait for the air to escape. Flip it over.
Time how long it takes for the water to flow through the caps to the bottom bottle. Adjust the amount of water in the bottle until it takes exactly one minute for the water to flow through.
If it’s too fast, reduce the hole size. If it’s too slow, add more holes.
The key here is fluid friction. Water is cohesive. It sticks to itself. Your hole size must account for surface tension.
The Sand Method
Sand is granular. It behaves like a fluid only under certain conditions. This method is cleaner. It lasts longer. Water evaporates. Sand sits there.
Supplies
- Two plastic bottles of equal size
- 2 to 3 cups of fine sand
- Measuring cup
- Funnel
- Scotch tape
- Pencil, scissors, hole punch
- One piece of card stock paper
- Stop-watch
Instructions
Pour 2 cups of sand into one of the bottles, using a funnel. Don’t overfill it. You need space for the sand to tumble.
Trace the opening of the second bottle on the card stock.
Cut out the circle and punch a hole in the middle. This is your restrictor. The hole size is critical for a one minute timer. It must be small enough to restrict flow but large enough to prevent clogging.
Tape this circle over the opening of the bottle that has the sand in it.
Place the bottles one on top of the other, neck-to-neck, with the card stock piece in between. Tape the bottles together in a way that you can remove the tape, for adjustment.
Stand the bottles so the sand is in the upper bottle.
