Air conditioners do more than just cool your home. It runs a silent war against humidity and heat. If your utility bills are rising while the summer drags on, your system may be working harder than it should.
Most homeowners think that the only solution is to buy a new efficient central air conditioner. This costs thousands of dollars. It requires permits. This means an invasive installation process.
But before you call an HVAC professional for a complete replacement, take a closer look. In many cases, the cause of inefficiency is not in the compressor. It shows up as leaks, dirt and wasted air flow. With a few targeted adjustments, you can reduce cooling costs by more than 20%. No contractors needed.
Close the openings where the air can escape
Cooling energy is expensive. When the air conditioner in your home leaks, you’re wasting money right in your backyard.
Start in the attic. It is often the cause of the biggest losses. Check around light fixtures, plumbing vents, and attic hatches. Seal these gaps with spray foam or caulk. Cold air descends. If your roof is not insulated or sealed properly, your air conditioner will lose the battle against the hot roof deck.
Next we look at windows and doors. Drafts are measurable. You can feel it with wet fingers or a lit candle. Use a weather strip around the movable frames. Apply sealant to all cracks in siding or foundations. These small seals add up. They stop the outside air from entering the cool shelter.
Change the filters regularly

Change the filter every 1-3 months depending on usage and pet hair. This is the cheapest type of maintenance. Extends the life of the fan motor and maintains high efficiency.
Optimize the thermostat settings
The thermostat is the brain of the operation. If you do not install it correctly, you will have to pay for comfort you don’t need.
Use a programmable thermostat or a smart thermostat. Set the temperature to rise while you sleep or work. Each additional degree saves about 3% in cooling costs. Don’t fight the system by setting the air conditioner temperature lower to cool it down faster. It doesn’t work that way. The units operate at the same capacity. Just run longer.
Move the thermostat away from heat sources. Do not place it near windows, lights or kitchen appliances. These false readings make the air conditioner think your home is warmer than it actually is. It runs unnecessarily.
Clean the outdoor unit
Condensers located outside the home must breathe. It releases heat from your home to the outside air. If it gets clogged, it won’t be able to release heat efficiently.
Remove leaves, grass clippings and debris from around the device. Leave 2 feet of space. Trim bushes and shrubs. This ensures proper airflow.
